Eversheds comment: Prospect of different UK state pension ages for different society groups raised

Commenting on the review of state pensions age Francois Barker, head of pensions at Eversheds, says:
“There has been a lot of excitement in the press about yesterday’s announcement confirming the first review of state pension age under the new statutory review mechanism. However, much of this is overblown as this is simply the first of the new five yearly reviews that are required to be carried out by law.
“As well as considering what a suitable state pension age is, in the immediate future and over the longer term, the review will also consider whether the current system of a universal state pension age is appropriate and supports the Government’s objectives of affordability, fairness and fuller working lives. If not, the review should set out how the system might better support these objectives. This raises the prospect of having different state pension ages for different groups within society, which would be a very significant change from the current universal system.”
