Eversheds comment: Local expertise key to Walmart China expansion success
- China
29-04-2015
Following news that retailer Walmart plans to open 115 new stores in China by 2017, Susan Samuel, partner and international expansion expert at law firm Eversheds, comments:
“News today of Walmart’s plans to increase the number of its stores in China follows an increasing trend of new and different UK and US food and non-food retailers expanding into China.
“These retailers are capitalising on China’s evolved market and growing middle class with increasing levels of disposable income. It is a market that has been traditionally dominated by luxury goods, but that is now saturated and so different retailers in fast fashion, for example, have seen the new opportunity.
“Key to their success and to Walmart’s success will be access to local expertise, particularly when it comes to building supplier relationships and the regulatory landscape, and getting their locations right.”
