Eversheds comment: Essential next UK government seeks new consensus around long term pensions system strategy
- United Kingdom
10-03-2015
Commenting on the Work and Pensions Select Committee's recommendations, Francois Barker, Head of Pensions at law firm Eversheds, says:
"I totally support the Select Committee's calls for a new independent pensions commission. The Turner Commission worked extremely hard to build a consensus which has lasted for almost a decade. But that consensus is now unravelling and it needs to be rebuilt. The past year has seen a shift back to short term pensions policy making – and an apparent difference of view within Government over whether pensions savings are about a long-term retirement income, or a short-term capital gain. It is essential that the next Government seeks to establish a new consensus around a long-term strategy for the UK pensions system – both within Government and externally. I believe that a new independent Commission, which seeks to take the politics out of pensions, will be the best way to achieve this."
