Eversheds Sutherland has enhanced its South African presence with the recent appointment of Head of Mining and Infrastructure Warren Beech, Partner Nicholas Veltman and senior associates Eben van Zyl and Refiloe Vengeni.
The team joined Eversheds Sutherland’s Johannesburg office on 1 April 2019, arriving from Hogan Lovells, where Warren previously led the mining team.
Warren has more than twenty years’ experience and has developed a highly recognised and specialised practice in the mining, natural resources, infrastructure and projects sectors. His experience includes health and safety, environment, anti-bribery and corruption and employment law matters. Warren was recently been recognised in Chambers Global 2019 for Mining Health & Safety law.
Warren advises local and international clients and has represented mining and non-mining companies on inquiries and inquests arising from workplace incidents and accidents.
Warren Beech, commented:
“We have, historically, provided multi-disciplinary services to the mining and related sectors, namely construction and engineering, but we have been narrowly classified as mining lawyers. The move to Eversheds Sutherland has given this team the opportunity to enhance our service offerings to the mining and infrastructure sectors.”
“We are looking forward to providing a range of multi-disciplinary services to the mining and infrastructure sectors through the various like-minded and aligned legal practitioners at Eversheds Sutherland, both in South Africa, the rest of Africa, and globally”.
Nicholas Veltman joins with extensive experience in general corporate and commercial litigation, environmental law, infrastructure and mining related agreements, mergers and acquisitions, with a specific focus on health and safety law. Nicholas has represented several clients in the mining and construction and engineering industries, as well as in the coal, platinum and chrome industries. Nicholas is currently recognised as a Rising Star by IFLR 1000 for Energy and Infrastructure.
Senior Associates, Eben van Zyl and Refiloe Vengeni join with experience in health and safety, litigation and dispute management. Refiloe was a former analyst at the Competition Commission of South Africa and has regulatory experience.
Peter van Niekerk, Managing Partner of the South Africa office, also commented:
“We are absolutely delighted to acquire such a prestigious team of talented lawyers. The acquisition gives us further expertise in the mining field and says much for the stature of the firm.”
